A Young Woman Works Through Her Depression, Gets Alcohol Treatment For Her Heavy And Abusive Drinking, And Bolsters Her Self Esteem

Emily was a thirty-eight-year-old financial analyst who was fed up with feeling depressed on a daily basis and fed up with her unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. Stated briefly, she was sick of feeling lackluster every morning, she hated the hangovers she went through on a regular basis, she was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship due to her excessive drinking, she was angry with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a valueless habit, and she missed her old motivation for doing various things she enjoyed.

Above and beyond the obvious alcohol-related health predicaments she was going through, perhaps the nastiest part of her drinking routine was the untrustworthy and devious person she had turned into. In her heart she realized that she had been deceitful about her drinking behavior to her family, friends and relatives and she also knew she had been less than truthful with herself about the "beneficial" consequences of drinking. Not only this but she made excuses for wolfing down four or five alcoholic beverages before going to social activities and she also rationalized needing a few drinks the first thing in the morning so that she could cope with the "anxiety" at her place of employment. Simply put, Emily got to a critical time in her life when she finally comprehended that she hit the bottom of the barrel in her life and was now ready to start the slow path that leads to recovery.

One of the primary ways that Emily put her "plan" into action was by requesting a transfer at her workplace. When her request was approved by Human Resources and by top management, she moved 250 miles away to a new city. If nothing else, this definitely made making new pals and separating herself from her old friends and pals easier. Then she visited with a healthcare professional in her new residence and scheduled an appointment for a complete exam.

After meeting with the physician and going through several laboratory tests, it was determined that Emily had made the regrettable transition from alcohol abuse to dependency on alcohol and as a consequence, needed alcohol detox and alcohol treatment. At this time, the healthcare practitioner made it a point to articulate the various alcoholic symptoms and the familiar symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to taking a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, her healthcare practitioner also told Emily that it was determined that she was clinically depressed and in need of counseling for this medical issue.

Due to her eagerness to follow through with the treatment regimen, after twelve weeks of residential treatment, Emily was ready to start therapy on an outpatient basis. At this point, she began working at her new job and over a period of a few weeks began fortifying her body by living an alcohol-free lifestyle, drinking spring water, eating nutritious foods, exercising, and taking vitamins.

After just about eight weeks of outpatient rehab during which time she never experienced an alcohol relapse, Emily stopped going to alcohol rehabilitation and instead began going three times every week to local AA meetings. Attending these meetings helped Emily continue her alcohol-free style of life, they provided her with the support she needed, and they served as a faithful reminder of the damaging consequences that are correlated with hazardous and careless drinking. Compared with her life less than a year ago, life was now worthwhile and loaded with possibilities that she could have never hoped for or brought to fruition while while she was engaged in careless drinking behavior.
